Tired of Waiting?

June 28, 2019

It’s been a minute!  I wanted to check in with you.  How’s business?

For me, really fun!  I’ve had the opportunity to work with clients who are hoping their businesses will develop into valuable assets at some point in the future - but aren't there yet.

I have a great group of clients.  Those of you who are business owners will recognize yourself in this description.  My clients are capable, competent, successful business owners. Each has hit a place of transition in their business.

Want to know what has them all stuck?  They all have some belief that gave birth to a pattern, that has created an energy drain, and they are stuck.

Let me tell you about this amazing woman- let’s call her Kate.  She has a lot going on. A bricks and mortar business, a house that’s going up for sale, aging parents, and her own family to tend.  Here’s what is super interesting - Kate has discovered another revenue stream, within her current business, that has HUGE potential!

Doesn’t that sound exciting?  When Kate told me about this a few months ago, I was thrilled for her.  We came up with a plan, did the market research, took a look at the possibilities around scale and sustainability.  All look really good.

Then, everything stopped.  Hmm, that might be an exaggeration.  Not really stopped. Kate was busy. She was totally occupied.  But, there was no momentum. Here’s what I saw-

Kate had taken a dive into the rabbit hole of research.  She spent a lot of time taking notes and doing more industry research.  In other words, she passed her days waiting.

Waiting for the right time, the right partner, the right investor.  Then, she explained that she could only do “one thing at a time”.

Wait, what?

We were sitting across from one another when she announced this with great confidence.  I looked at her and asked her, “How true is that?”. Kate paused, thinking.

Then, she said, “Well, I just can’t concentrate on more than one thing at a time.”  Okay. We understand that no one can really concentrate on more than one thing at a time.  But every day is filled with moments, hours, whole blocks of time that can be used for different things.

My next question was, “How well does that belief ‘I can only do one thing at a time’, serve you?”

Turns out, it didn’t serve Kate, or her businesses, at all.  That belief paralyzed Kate. It got in the way of taking action.  It brought her decision-making abilities to a screeching halt.

But, we all do it, don’t we?  We tell ourselves things that sound true.  These types of beliefs are such a part of our thoughts that we often take them for granted.  We don’t usually challenge those thoughts or beliefs.

Once Kate stopped, answered the question about truth and examined how the belief  did NOT serve her, or her business in any way, she was able to step back and breathe.  Within a few minutes she had created an action plan for each of the 5 buckets of demands on her time and attention.

Kate decided to choose one item out of each bucket every day.  Kate isn’t waiting anymore. She is acting - decisively, and with purpose.

I can’t wait to see what she has accomplished in our next session.  I will keep you posted on Kate. She is going places!

All my best,

Wendy
